Why would a website say my order was 12/31/1969 when the internet wasn't even a thing then?

I had a friend ask me the other day why their order from Chewy.com said it would be delivered Dec 31 on 1969. Here I am trying to ELI5 it, but I probably made it even more complicated than the initial comment.

I had a friend ask me the other day why their order from Chewy.com said it would be delivered Dec 31 on 1969. To me, of course, this makes a lot of sense that someone didn't sanitize their inputs and something querying a key-value store timed out and threw an error, but trying to explain that in a Facebook comment was left with more questions than answers. Here I am trying to ELI5 it, but I probably made it even more complicated than the initial comment.

Oh well! Like/Comment/Subscribe if any of this is remotely interesting even though it probably is not!
